Unlike other colleges with special course requirements, unstable administration, and strange traditional customs such as Freshman not being able to say the word âduckâ, I found complete and absolute nothing. On our way back to Murchison, my dorm mates and I compared notes on what we had discussed in our different seminars and talked about Leonidas and the Spartans until lights-out. When I went to the Summer Academy program last summer in Santa Fe, I found myself most looking forward to the math and science tutorials. While some others groaned that it was time to do our Archimedes reading for the next day, I excitedly isolated myself in the back of the library. I loved reading so closely and spending the time discovering Archimedesâ theories. It focused entirely on Greek works, starting with Homer and the playwrights, transitioning into Thucydides, and then on to Plato and Aristotle. I enjoyed reading and discussing these works very much. St. Johnâs is appealing because I will get to read some of my favorite texts for a second time, as well as many new works. My favorite aspect of studying at St. Johnâs was the environment of free discussion. The studentsâ intellectual freedom lived on outside the classroom, inspiring our discussions of the readings over breakfast, during our afternoon free period, and during our evening group meetings. At seven oâclock the first evening, I was treated to my first seminar, and I fell in love with the school as well as its location. My favorite protagonist and I grew up together until I moved on from the third grade, finally outgrowing that special connection. But reading the Junie B. Jones books taught me to connect in different ways with other texts. I knew what to look for, what it felt like, and I desired to find that connection in other places. Junie opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, and saved my dad a neck cramp from sleeping at a weird angle. However, through my entire high school life, I was not allowed to have a conversation in classes. I love that teachers and students alike go by the simple formal address. This practice helps to foster an atmosphere of respect and equality in the classroom, giving students the confidence to take intellectual risks. On our way back to Murchison, my dorm mates and I compared notes on what we had discussed in our different seminars and talked about Leonidas and the Spartans until lights-out. When I went to the Summer Academy program last summer in Santa Fe, I found myself most looking forward to the math and science tutorials. While some others groaned that it was time to do our Archimedes reading for the next day, I excitedly isolated myself in the back of the library. I loved reading so closely and spending the time discovering Archimedesâ theories. It focused entirely on Greek works, starting with Homer and the playwrights, transitioning into Thucydides, and then on to Plato and Aristotle. I enjoyed reading and discussing these works very much. St. Johnâs is appealing because I will get to read some of my favorite texts for a second time, as well as many new works. My favorite aspect of studying at St. Johnâs was the environment of free discussion. The studentsâ intellectual freedom lived on outside the classroom, inspiring our discussions of the readings over breakfast, during our afternoon free period, and during our evening group meetings. At seven oâclock the first evening, I was treated to my first seminar, and I fell in love with the school as well as its location. My favorite protagonist and I grew up together until I moved on from the third grade, finally outgrowing that special connection. But reading the Junie B. Jones books taught me to connect in different ways with other texts. I knew what to look for, what it felt like, and I desired to find that connection in other places. Junie opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, and saved my dad a neck cramp from sleeping at a weird angle. However, through my entire high school life, I was not allowed to have a conversation in classes. I love that teachers and students alike go by the simple formal address. This practice helps to foster an atmosphere of respect and equality in the classroom, giving students the confidence to take intellectual risks. The feeling of being involved, nervous and excited all at the same time. The most important aspect about the Summer Academy was finding my people, the ones who talked about Nietzsche and Plato at lunch and had long debates and poetry slams after Seminar. Making friends was never an easy feat for me, but at the Summer Academy, I found everyone I talked to felt like we had been friends for years. I made an even more intimate group of friends who I still keep in touch with because they are more than friends to me, they are family. What excites me about St. Johnâs the most is that I have some previous exposure and that familiarity will improve both my understanding of these texts as well as my ability to discuss them. College Admission Essay Samples I have already read some of the books in the curriculum once, and so now I will be able to âread a book,â during my second round of reading and discussion at St. Johnâs. My junior year in particular was my most interesting round of humanities. We discussed Herodotusâs description of the Battle of Thermopylae. Our tutor, Ms. Shukla, posed the question, âIs bravery reasonable? â My fellow students and I talked more quickly than I could jot down notes, and I left the classroom feeling more energized and awake than I had two hours before. I wanted to know more, I wanted to experience it myself. The summer after my Junior year I signed up for a Summer Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I immediately found my people and a continual comfort of my environment which automatically equated to the feeling of being home. Home is the feeling of being comfortable with the uncertainty and uncomfortable situations. Being quiet was the unspoken rule of manner and etiquette, where the dominance of the teacher to teach and submission of student to learn by observation was naturally accepted by all members of every class. Energy is defined as the ability to do work. Energy comes in various forms. Here are 10 common types of energy and examples of them. Mechanical Energy Mechanical energy is energy that results from movement or the location of an object. Mechanical energy is the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy. Examples: An object possessing mechanical energy has both kinetic and potential energy, although the energy of one of the forms may be equal to zero. A moving car has kinetic energy. If you move the car up a mountain, it has kinetic and potential energy. A book sitting on a table has potential energy. Thermal Energy Thermal energy or heat energy reflects the temperature difference between two systems. Example: A cup of hot coffee has thermal energy. You generate heat and have thermal energy with respect to your environment. Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is energy resulting from changes in the atomic nuclei or from nuclear reactions. Example: Nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, and nuclear decay are examples of nuclear energy. An atomic detonation or power from a nuclear plant are specific examples of this type of energy. Chemical Energy Chemical energy results from chemical reactions between atoms or molecules. There are different types of chemical energy, such as electrochemical energy and chemiluminescence. Example: A good example of chemical energy is an electrochemical cell or battery. Electromagnetic Energy Electromagnetic energy (or radiant energy) is energy from light or electromagnetic waves. Some common interventions used were wa lking and cycling and a small increase in the points of mental and physical health domains was observed. Aerobics have been known to boost the immune system and helps in preventing the development of diabetes, heart diseases and obesity. It is also implicated in the improvement in the mental health, lowering depression and positive self-esteem (Sheffield Woods-Giscomb, 2016). For instance, while childhood obesity has been an ever growing problem globally, aerobics can help in lowering the effects of this condition. Aerobics are also significant in keeping physically fit, buildup and maintenance of bone density, mobility of joints and physiological health (Wu et al., 2016). On other occasions, regular aerobic exercises have been shown to facilitate in the prevention or treatment of some chronic conditions like obesity and high blood pressure. Taking an example of cardiovascular health, aerobics have been found to prevent and lower the effects of coronary heart diseases. In the mental health, aerobics keeps the mental health working by enhancing development of the neurons, synaptic plast icity, and the improvement of cognitive functions (Lindegrd et al., 2015). It also confers neuroprotective roles in either neurodegenerative and neuromuscular health conditions. Aerobics also increases the blood flow and oxygen to the brain, promotes the roles of growth factors that are involved in development of new nerve cells, increases the chemicals such as glutamate and dopamine that help in the brain cognition functions. Aerobic dances are among the many methods used in controlling weight, and improving confidence and self-esteem. In most cases, overweight becomes a stumbling block and hence people cannot enjoy life as well as other problems associated with overweight like obesity, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. Moreover, overweight people are unable to mentally handle the thoughts of going outside and being seen. The mental health of a person makes them what they really are. Engaging in a dance helps in burning of calories just as swimming, walking, running or cycling. However, the physical benefits from a dance and physical exercise are more than the mental changes. After a dance or aerobic exercise, the way one feels about themselves is way better than what in real sense they are, thus increasing their self-esteem. Dance therapy offers a psychotherapy which makes use of movements so as to enhance social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. The dance therapists engage people w ith intellectual and emotional problems, as well as life threatening diseases (Carless Douglas, 2016). It is also common to find dance therapists working in hospitals, psychiatrist centers, prisons, preschools, private practice and day care centers. Dances are a direct way of enabling people to speak out their emotions especially when undergoing traumatic experiences. Moreover, it enables people with physical problems to raise their self-esteem in life. Dances also enable the bodies to be stretched and hence remain in good shape alongside reducing stress (Fetzner Asmundson, 2015). Regular dances involve physical movements which also slows down the process of aging. This is because while dancing, there is high rates of muscles contraction and relaxation and increased breathing, similar to other forms of aerobics. In people with joint and muscle problems, dances help strengthen the bones and can be a remedy in the treatment of osteoporosis in females. Dancing also helps in the lubrication of joints and hence helps in alleviating pain from arthritis (Wu et al., 2016). Just as the aerobics, dances facilitate the burning of calories and this helps people with diabetes to reduce their blood sugar levels since it can be used in the muscles to make energy for the exercise. In other cases, the exercises and dances help in burning cholesterol and lower down the low density lipoprotein as they raise the high density lipoproteins thus protecting the person from high blood pressure (Daniels et al., 2017). Dances also improves memory, improve moods and hence lower stress (Fetzner Asmundson, 2015). Dances and aerobics thus confer health and human mind several benefits which improves the quality. It is evident that aerobics and dance are physical in nature in that they involve use of energy. These enables the breakdown of fats to generate energy and hence prevent people from cardiovascular diseases, obesity, overweight and high blood pressUre among other health benefits.
